"TAKING ON THE ELEMENTS"
TAKING ON THE ELEMENTS is steeped in the way VELUX operates on the sustainability agenda. While following a far reaching climate strategy to cut CO2 emissions "in-house", VELUX is introducing carbon neutral homes for sustainable living.
VELUX Commitment:
- Responsibility for the environment is firmly anchored in the VELUX values and the commitment to behave like a model company- now stepping up environmental efforts
- VELUX believe in sustainability and that as a company they have an obligation to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and thereby global warming
Climate Strategy:
VELUX will make major cuts in CO2 emissions. In the course of the next few years, VELUX will invest up to DKK 400 million in energy-improving initiatives that will reduce the Group's 2007 global CO2 emissions by 20% by 2012 and 50% by 2020.
The objective of CO2 strategy is two-fold:
- Save energy as a company by rationalizing operations
- Supply products that can help others to save energy- in other words, contribute to Sustainable Living
Business Objective:
On the production side of the business, the objective is to contribute to Sustainable Living. Buildings account for 40% of the western world's energy consumption, so it is perfectly natural that as a building components manufacturer, VELUX take a share of the responsibility for reducing that consumption.
Sustainable Living means three things for VELUX:
The buildings of the future must have a good indoor climate, they must be energy-efficient and they must use sustainable energy sources. VELUX has something to offer in all three- partly because of products, and partly because of knowledge and experience in energy, daylight and architecture.
The VELUX House in La Rochelle
The VELUX House is the official exit pavilion at the COP15 in Copenhagen. The next destination is La Rochelle for the start of the VELUX 5 OCEANS. The house is designed to replace the former closed roof construction of multi-storey buildings and demonstrate how energy renovation of older apartment buildings can be achieved by utilising daylight and natural ventilation at the same time as minimising the use of resources- and thus CO2 emissions.
International VELUX Award
The International VELUX Award 2010 for Students of Architecture with focus on sustainable living.
"Light of Tomorrow" is the overall theme of the International VELUX Award. The award seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built environment with an open-minded and experimental approach. Therefore, the Award seeks to widen the boundaries of daylight in architecture, including aesthetics, functionality, sustainability, and the interaction between buildings and environment. The Awards will be hosted in Le Rochelle on the start weekend of the VELUX 5 OCEANS in October 2010.
